Supreme Court Reiterates Ban on Polluting Firecrackers
Green Firecrackers Only Allowed, States Ordered to Strictly Comply
Celebration Should Not Come at the Cost of Environment, SC Observes
The Supreme Court has reiterated its order banning the sale, possession, and use of polluting firecrackers. The apex court clarified that only green firecrackers, which have significantly reduced emissions, are permitted. The order was issued on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, in response to a petition challenging the ban.
In its order, the Supreme Court stated that "a celebration by polluting the environment is all about being selfish." The bench, headed by Justice M.R. Shah and Justice A.S. Bopanna, observed that the enjoyment of one's own rights should not come at the cost of the health and well-being of others.
The Court directed all states and Union territories to strictly comply with its order. It ordered that special teams be formed to conduct inspections and ensure that no polluting firecrackers are sold or used. The Court also directed the authorities to promptly investigate any violations and take appropriate action.
The Supreme Court's order is a significant step towards reducing air pollution during Diwali and other festivals. The use of polluting firecrackers has been a major contributor to air pollution, leading to severe health problems for millions of people.
The green firecrackers, which are now the only permissible type, have been developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). These firecrackers emit significantly less smoke and particulate matter compared to traditional firecrackers.
The Supreme Court's order is a reminder that we all have a responsibility to protect the environment. Celebrating festivals should not come at the cost of our health or the well-being of our planet.
