Early Life and Education

Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Her parents, Shyamala Gopalan Harris and Donald Harris, were both immigrants from India and Jamaica, respectively.

Harris attended Howard University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in political science and economics.

Career as a Lawyer and Prosecutor

After graduating from law school, Harris began her career as an assistant district attorney in Alameda County, California.

In 2003, Harris was elected San Francisco City Attorney, a position she held until 2011.

Attorney General of California

In 2010, Harris was elected Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman and first African American to hold the position.
